Appling, Ga.

Appling is an unincorporated community in and the county seat of Columbia County, Georgia which is a suburb of the Augusta metropolitan area. Appling was formerly an incorporated city and served as the county seat of Columbia County. However as a result of legislation passed in 1993 requiring incorporated cities to provide at least three municipal services, Appling was not able to remain incorporation and finally lost its charter on 1 June 1995. Appling may retain its reference as the county seat of Columbia County, however Columbia County governmental centers, judicial offices, and courthouse annex are now located in Evans, Georgia, a suburb of the Augusta - Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Within an approximate 20 minutes commute from Appling is Fort Gordon, a large multi-mission, multi-service military installation. Another attraction is Mistletoe Park, located on the shores of Clarks Hill Lake, is within an approximate 15 minute commute from Appling, an hour outside of Augusta, or about 35 minutes from Fort Gordon. The Park is a favorite spot for fishing, camping, waterskiing, swimming, vacationing, or just getting away to relax. Because of the location of Appling, many local residents and visitors find the Park to be a great spot not only to visit but to set up camp if you’re in the area visiting family and friends assigned to Fort Gordon.
