Augusta

Located on the banks of the Savannah River, Augusta was founded in 1736 during the British colonial period. Named as tribute to Princess Augusta, wife of the Prince of Wales, Augusta is the state's second oldest and second largest city. Augusta is the county seat for Richmond County. Formerly recognized as a major center of trading and later as a seat of state government, Augusta is now most notably known as home to the Masters Golf Tournament. Commonly referred to as the Garden City, Augusta not only has a blend of Southern charm but also embellishes a colorful past filled with historic events and locations just waiting to be explored, e.g., the home of George Walton a two-time Georgia governor and the youngest original signer of the Declaration of Independence, the restored childhood home of former president Woodrow Wilson where he lived during the Civil War, the Augusta Canal, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, and much more.
